His personality switches based on the people he is around and thus no one really knows the true Joey except for his sister. Generally, he is viewed as a shy, introverted and anti-social young man who doesn’t seek attention or praise and prefers to blend into the background. However, Joey has a quick wit, and unnatural intelligence that leans towards a less than moral compass and a very down to earth outlook on life. He is hardworking and prefers to work independently as opposed to with others as he views others as a way to being let down and disappointed. Joey knows from past experiences that one cannot rely on others as they will always leave and let you down. He knows the only one who is going to be able to make him happy is himself and thus he is independently ambitious and plans to do exactly as he desires with his life. And since his parents are deceased, there’s really no one to tell him he can’t. However, despite all of this, at the heart of Joey’s ambition and independence, there’s a socially awkward young nerd who just wants to find his place in the world. He is the only biological child of the Squib, John Maverick. His mother Abigail was married previous to a man named Lawrence Clarke. This had been an arranged marriage to purebloods at the time and Abigail was never happy in her marriage except for the birth of her daughter (Janie). Abigail and Lawrence were only married for a short three years before Abigail met and fell madly in love with John Maverick. They divorced to save face within the pureblood society even though Abigail’s marriage to John would have her shunned from the Haywoods. John Maverick doted on his son, Joey. While he loved his stepdaughter so much he adopted her as his own and gave her the Maverick last name, he had always wanted a son to raise and follow in his footsteps. Joey was a delightful child and highly suitable to display in pureblood society despite his blood status as a half-blood. He was a quiet, well-mannered young boy who only spoke to adults when he was addressed by them. Joey kept out of the limelight and never gave anyone reason to doubt him. He shied from being the center of attention and preferred the quiet company of his books and lonely corners where he couldn’t be found easily. Because of John’s career, the family did travel a lot during Joey’s younger days. They spent time in Scotland, Australia, Korea, Brazil and a number of other countries. The kids were homeschooled in muggle affairs by an elder Professor named Edwin and cared for by the loving Nanny June, both hired to help the family out with their busy socialite schedules in the muggle and magical world. When Joey was eight years old, his mother had taken the children to visit their uncle Kaleb. This is where he met his future BFF. They made quick friends over a mess of crispy treats, venturing into the basement and discovering the Mirror of Nightmares before tearing out of the house to race into the pond. The two became rather inseparable for the next several years. Unfortunately, just before Joey would begin his schooling, his father was lost at sea. They assumed he was dead, and in her devastation, Abigail was said to die of a broken heart many months later. Joey, who always as a bit of a shy boy, become more introverted. His connections remained with his sister, their Professor and Nanny June. With the death of their parents, the estate of the Mavericks went into the hands of their uncle who didn't care for his niece and nephew all that much considering they were a stain on the family’s good name as their mother had married the Maverick Squib. Kaleb entrusted their care to the muggle woman who had been hired to help raise the brats and their only real contact was the monthly household allowance. School Years || Attending Hogwarts in his first year was rather difficult for Joey who had retreated into himself after his parents died. If it hadn’t been for his sister he might not have went to school at all. Fortunately for Joey, he was sorted into Slytherin alongside his BFF and having his much more outgoing friend as a dormmate allowed Joey to become better, easier friends with the others in his dorm. Unfortunately, the damage of losing their parents hadn’t only affect Joey. His sister soon fell into a delirium from her grief. Her biological father took her out of school for serious treatment but it would soon be evident that Janie would never recover and Joey would be left to navigate the waters of adolescent on his own. Joey continued through his school years studying hard and having an affinity for Potions. It was so much like cooking which he had loved to do with his mother before she passed that it came naturally. He could often be found in the Potion’s classroom. He had found his comfort place by the end of his second year and figured it was smooth sailing from there. How wrong he was. As Joey hit a growth spurt between his second and third year, it became evident those around him noticed. All his classmates were beginning to notice the opposite sex (or the same depending on sexuality) and Joey, being a year older than the rest, had hit puberty first. He did not enjoy the attention.
