Ancient Runes was a class that not many young people took. It was difficult, far more so than other elective courses. It likely didn't help matters that the subject was headed by an eccentric man who took nothing seriously. Even now he had scratched incorrect squiggles among the Elder Futhark Runic alphabet on the blackboard to see how long it took his students to realize it was wrong. He was hoping they would be halfway through their rune translation work before realizing they had it completely wrong.

"Yes, welcome, come in, take a seat. Hurry along now we have a lot to cover and you are on my time now!" The man was seated on his desk facing the class, eyes twinkling with his amusement. His black school robes were technically within guidelines only tailored to not be big, billowy, or androgynous in appearance. No, they were lined at the collar and wrists with fluffy black feathers and tight to his slim frame in a way that not many other professors dared dress. The Pureblooded families that knew him simply called him quirky or odd and often warned their children that avoiding drugs would keep them from being similar.

A loopy wave of his wand had parchment papers, all identical in size, floating out to drift down onto each desk currently occupied by a student. Across the top was a full paragraph in Elder Futhark that they would have to translate, with the additional squiggles to match what he had on the board. As this group were older he fully expected them to know more so a challenge like this shouldn't trip them up forever. Just long enough for it to amuse Warren.

"Alright summer is over and its time to get back to your studies so turn your thinking brains on. We'll be starting with a refresher on Elder Futhark runes as you can see, and a very exciting translation paper. Work in pairs or groups, I don't care, but you only have until class ends to work it out!"

13:15. Nathaniel has approximately fifteen minutes to get from the library to Ancient Runes. He's timed it this way in case something goes amiss between the library and the classroom. It gives him some leeway. He might trip up on the stairs if they choose to move - but that never happens. Nathaniel has their movements timed as well. He's spent time studying them in his first year so that they can't trip him up and make him late for classes. There's always a first. Just yesterday, Nathaniel had found himself sitting in the great hall at lunch longer than his allotted time because his mind had wandered to a certain Hufflepuff he finds fascinating and he had lost track of the minutes. He'd almost been late to a class which began at 13:00. That would not have gone over well. Fortunately, it only takes about seven minutes to get from the library to Ancient Runes with Professor Rosier. Nathaniel is there with eight minutes to spare. This means he has time to take out his quill, parchment, inkwell and textbook to translate, should they be working on that today. He also has time to sit and study the runes on the board with a look of confusion etched around his conventionally handsome boyish looks. "Um...Professor..." But he' can't quite find the right word to describe the squiggly marks in the runes that don't look familiar to him.  Warren Rosier ,
